We remember Alan as an interesting person to speak to and always enjoyed his company at the gatherings of our teaching-based group which we laughingly called "the Escape Committee".  He was particularly keen on sport, football in particular, and we had many debates on the development of the game together with the teams in it. We are very sorry that he is no longer with us and feel sure that he will be missed by many people.
